Waller County Commissioners Court voted Oct. 28 to approve an agreement supporting Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels, with $70,000 in county funding for 2027. The county said more than 40,000 meals were delivered to about 200 Waller County residents last year through the program.
Tracy Hobdy, who represents the nonprofit, told commissioners that the program offers more than food. "35% of our clients live alone," Hobdy said. The nonprofit serves residents in Fort Bend and Waller counties, including seniors who have trouble shopping for groceries, preparing food or leaving home.
Waller County Judge Trey Duhon said the county and the nonprofit both want to expand the program in Waller County. He also raised the possibility of providing space for a local operating location as the county develops more public facilities. Duhon encouraged residents to consider volunteering.
Hobdy said the Texas Department of Agriculture requires counties in its Home-Delivered Meal Grant Program to show financial support for the groups serving their residents. The county's commitment also helps the nonprofit qualify for additional state funding. County officials said payment from the 2027 budget cannot be issued before Jan. 1.
