A new "26" has been painted on the Katy water tower to honor the Katy High School softball team's third state championship. The city and team held a brief ceremony Thursday afternoon at the Historic Town Square. The "26" joins the "15" and "19" for the 2015 and 2019 state champion softball teams. The tower also honors nine state championship football teams.
The Tigers won the title in May by defeating Forney at McCombs Field in Austin. They finished the season at 39-5 after a 22-game winning streak and hit 97 home runs, a Class 6A record, according to the report. The city honored the team in July, and the players received their rings at halftime of an Oct. 15 football game.
Mayor Dusty Thiele thanked the team at the ceremony. Coach Megan VanEtte said the players put in a long season that starts in January and ends in June, with more than 40 games. VanEtte said the painted tower will let players show their children and grandchildren what they accomplished. Players also received ice cream gift certificates to Southern Dough Baking Co., across the street.
