Stephen Russell Herman, 56, was arrested Thursday, Oct. 29, in Crosby, two days after he left the Liberty County Courthouse during a recess in his trial, according to the Liberty County Sheriff's Office. A Liberty County jury had convicted Herman of manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance and sentenced him to 60 years in prison. The trial was in the 75th State District Court, with Judge Mark Morefield presiding. Herman had been out on bond when he left the courthouse on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Investigators said Herman had apparently been hiding out in Crosby after he left. The Liberty County Sheriff's Office Criminal Interdiction Unit, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Harris County Violent Crimes Apprehension Team led the investigation, the sheriff's office said. Herman was taken into custody without incident.

Investigators also arrested Jamie Diane Daughtery, 46, of Baytown. She is accused of helping Herman flee and has been charged with hindering apprehension or prosecution of a known felon. Herman was first arrested in May 2025, after officers executed a search warrant at a Dayton residence and found methamphetamine.
