Amarillo police are asking for help in the 2003 killing of Don Lutz, the owner of Kwik Kar. Lutz was shot to death in his front living room on Halloween night, according to investigators. Neighbors found him after a neighbor asked for a wellness check when he had not been seen for several days.
Investigators believe the shooting happened between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Oct. 31, 2003, while families were out in the neighborhood. Detectives ruled out robbery because nothing had been taken and Lutz still had cash in his pocket. Sgt. Joel Hodges of the Amarillo Police Department's Cold Case Unit said investigators do not know why the killing happened.
Police are asking people who lived in or grew up in the River Road area in 2003 to recall that evening. Detectives said even a small detail, such as an unfamiliar car, could help.
