James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa spoke with other Democratic nominees at an event at The Espee in San Antonio. Republican Ken Paxton spoke at the Angry Elephant in north San Antonio. Attendees applauded both candidates.
Talarico said he taught sixth-grade language arts at Rhodes Middle School and that San Antonio taught him how to lead. His platform includes lowering costs for working families by raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations, and barring members of Congress from trading stocks. He backs tight border security and a more humane approach to immigrants than the current administration. Paxton called for tax cuts for the working class and fewer business regulations. He also supports continued pressure on immigration law and expanding oil and gas production, which he said would protect hundreds of thousands of jobs. He said his goal is for every Texan to afford a home, raise a family and live a healthy life.
Recent polls show Talarico leading with 49% and Paxton at 43%. Bexar County has released early voting figures that are expected to exceed the totals from the 2024 presidential election. Talarico is next scheduled to campaign in Austin, and Paxton in Conroe.
