A family became stranded in deep mud near Candelaria and was rescued by Presidio County sheriff's deputies and federal partners, the Presidio County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.

The sheriff's office said the family called 911 while exploring the river area. They were stuck about 5 miles west of Candelaria on Chispa Road, beyond the pavement. The office said the area can become extremely difficult, if not impossible, to navigate during the rainy season because of deep mud and challenging terrain.

Deputies worked with U.S. Border Patrol and used specialized vehicles designed for those conditions, the sheriff's office said. After several hours, the family was assisted and made their way back to town.
