Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Friday, in a post on X, that production of the Cybertruck "will be winding down" around the middle of 2027 at the company's facility outside Austin, Texas. Musk said the change would allow Tesla to increase production of its Cybercab robotaxi.

Kelley Blue Book estimated that Tesla sold 20,237 Cybertrucks last year, about half the number sold the year before. The firm said Tesla's sales through the end of September were down another 28% this year. Musk had once forecast that Tesla would make 250,000 Cybertrucks a year.

Armen Hareyan, who covers autos for the Torque News site, said the vehicle became "a cultural symbol -- loved, mocked and impossible to ignore." Spencer Penn, a former Tesla executive, said some bets in the company's push for innovation "work and some of these bets don't."
