The Sam Houston Memorial Museum in Huntsville is asking the community for help rebuilding after a September fire destroyed two buildings and damaged a third. The fundraising goal is $500,000. Museum director Derrick Birdsall said 16 donors had given about $2,500 as of his interview with KBTX.

The Sept. 23 fire destroyed the pottery and glassblowing sheds and severely damaged a woodworking workshop. Nearby historic cabins were spared, but Birdsall said the fire destroyed historic log cabin timbers stored in one of the sheds. He said the workshop, which is used to maintain the grounds, will also need to be torn down. Birdsall said some people questioned the cost, but he said the shed was an integral part of the museum grounds. He also said the museum is using money it would otherwise spend on artifacts to help fund the rebuild.

Matt Bethea, Sam Houston State University's vice president for university advancement, said some university funds may be available, but the school is seeking community support. Birdsall hopes the area can be rebuilt within six months, though he said the timeline depends on fundraising. The fundraiser will stay open until rebuilding costs are covered. Donation information is available on the museum's website and social media pages.
