Wheelock Elementary in Lubbock is celebrating its 75th birthday with a party that brings current students and former students together. The school first opened in 1952. On Friday, current students gave guided tours to alumni.
Principal Cayce Noble, who has led the school since 2021, said the students were nervous at first but grew more confident. The seven-stop tour covered the history of the school's namesake, Frank E. Wheelock, the school's spirit, how the school has changed over time, and a legacy painting project that alumni were invited to work on.
John Greer, a former Wheelock student and son of the school's first principal, Milton Greer, said the visit brought back many memories. He praised the tour guides and said the friendships he made at the school mean a lot to him.
Wheelock plans a second day of celebrations on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
