Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa (D) has promised to end the Texas Education Freedom Accounts program, which provides state-funded accounts for school expenses. In a campaign interview with KPRC 2, Hinojosa said she would support legislation repealing the private-school portion. She said, "My priority is public money and public schools."
Repeal requires lawmakers, and future funding depends on the budget process. The published payment schedule for the current school year has not changed. The current budget provides $1 billion through August 31, 2027. Comptroller-elect Sarah Eckhardt said she would administer the program while examining spending and academic results, the Houston Chronicle reported.
According to the state's October 1 report, 116,574 student accounts were funded, compared with about 274,000 applications. Private-school students have a published award of $10,474. The final installment for private-school students is due February 1, 2027, if they remain enrolled in a participating school.
