More than 40 construction and renovation permits have been issued for downtown Nacogdoches in the last 12 months, according to city information. The projects include plumbing and electrical work, interior remodels, façade improvements and changes in occupancy.

Mike Neu, the city's executive director of development, said the city is focusing on downtown to encourage growth, as part of its 2023 Downtown Master Plan. He said research shows people want more businesses downtown.

The city said a multi-story parking structure is proposed at the southeast corner of Pillar and Fredonia streets, on a lot owned by Elliott Electric Supply. Elliott is also renovating a former bank building into a corporate headquarters. Neu said construction on the lot could start within 10 to 12 months.

Natalee Dunn of Visit Nac said hotel occupancy reached 56% over the past year, up 9.7% from the year before. Updates on the city's downtown plan are available on its website.
