The Victoria West Lady Warriors opened their 2026-27 basketball season Friday night with a non-district game against No. 17 La Vernia of Class 4A. Five seniors start for West, with three more upperclassmen on the bench.
Fifth-year head coach Christina Rankin-Williams said she believes 100 percent that the team can win district again. She said the team is smaller than last year's but will play faster and more disciplined. The team will compete in District 29-5A with Carroll, Ray, Veterans Memorial, No. 19 Flour Bluff, Gregory-Portland and Victoria East.
Rankin-Williams said the new district plays a different style than the Houston-area schools West faced last year in District 22. She said the teams in the new district will run more structured halfcourt sets. She also said she expects the starters to play about 80 percent of the time, with reserves rotating in. Senior guard Azyiah Morgan, the team's only four-year letterman, is one of the top returning players.
