Maverick County officials held a ceremony Friday, November 6, at the county courthouse to proclaim November as Veterans Month. Interim County Judge Pablo Garcia Jr. and Precinct 4 Commissioner Roberto Ruiz attended along with elected officials, veterans and community members. The ceremony came ahead of Veterans Day on November 11, 2026.
The proclamation recognizes the service and sacrifices of veterans and reaffirms the county's support for them and their families. According to information provided for the event, more than 1,600 veterans live in the community. Officials also gave an award to Maverick County Veterans Service Officer Miguel Chavez for his service to local veterans and their families. The county said Chavez went beyond the call of duty in his work to help veterans get assistance and support.
Veterans Day is observed each year on November 11 to honor all who have served in the U.S. military. It began as Armistice Day, marking the end of fighting in World War I on November 11, 1918, and later was expanded to honor veterans of all wars. County officials encouraged residents to remember local veterans throughout November. Garcia and the Commissioners Court thanked those who attended and expressed appreciation to veterans across the county.
