The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department planned to discuss ceding control of more than 1,000 acres of public land in Cameron County, according to a draft agenda shared with The Texas Tribune. The land is along the Gulf coast and is valued for its natural habitat and beaches. The item was to be discussed behind closed doors at a commission meeting in early November, but it was later removed from the final agenda.

The agency owns nearly 500 parcels in Cameron County, according to the county appraisal district. One of the largest is Boca Chica State Park, about 1,060 acres near SpaceX's operations. Elon Musk's rocket company has acquired more land near the park over the past decade. Texas Monthly reported that commissioners were expected to discuss the sale of 1,300 acres, purportedly to SpaceX, in a closed session. Locals and environmentalists have expressed concern about the possible loss of control of the area, the story said.

The Tribune requested the draft agenda on Oct. 19. The agency later asked the Attorney General's office to block its release. The story said the commission has not publicly commented on the planned discussion.
