Compal USA Technology, a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer, is asking Williamson County for tax abatements for a new plant that could create 1,000 jobs. The company builds computers, smartphones and tablets for companies including Dell Technologies Inc., Apple and Google. It plans to invest at least $200 million in a service center in Georgetown and a manufacturing facility in Taylor.
According to county documents, the county would cut Compal's taxes on leased and personal property by 30% for 10 years. In return, the company would invest in the facility and commit to hiring at least 900 workers. Williamson County Commissioners Court will consider the tax breaks at its Dec. 8 meeting.
Georgetown and Taylor approved their own incentives a year ago, totaling a combined $6.2 million, according to city and county documents. The Taylor plant would make consumer electronics. Once fully staffed, Compal would become Taylor's second-largest employer, after Samsung Electronics.
