The Amarillo City Council has appointed Rodney Rhoades as interim city manager, following the resignation of Grayson Path. According to the city, Rhoades has nearly 40 years of local government experience in operations and administration with Texas cities, counties and utility districts.

The council hired a firm that specializes in executive recruitment for local governments to help find a permanent leader. Rhoades will receive temporary housing or a monthly housing stipend, plus reimbursement of routine business expenses. He will work with the council and department leaders to maintain services, evaluate weaknesses and propose improvements.

The city said it plans to contract Rhoades for six months to a year while it searches for a permanent replacement, and that the contract could be extended depending on performance. Rhoades said his goal is to leave the organization a little better than it was when he arrived.
