The Midland Police Department says the number of registered sex offenders living within city limits has dropped from 268 to 224 since a new city ordinance was passed earlier this year. The department describes the ordinance as aimed at improving public safety.

According to MPD, about 43 registered sex offenders have been prevented from moving to Midland, and four have been arrested for entering zones. The department said that without the ordinance, the number living in Midland could have risen to about 355.

MPD said it will continue enforcing the ordinance to help protect the community.
