The Plano Flags of Honor is marking its 10th anniversary with 1,111 American flags honoring veterans, active-duty military members and first responders. The display is at Red Tail Pavilion at Oak Point Park from Nov. 7 to 14. Each flag has a dedication card with the story of a person being honored, representing service from the Civil War to today.
The event began in 2017 and is made possible by more than 300 volunteers each year, according to organizers. This year also coincides with the nation's 250th anniversary. Event co-chair Lisa Bloomer said, "Every one of these 1,111 flags carries a name and a story." The display is free and open 24 hours a day, with Taps played at sunset each evening.
Planned events include the Patriots Run 5K and Fun Run on Nov. 7, a Plano Safety Fair and Touch-a-Truck event that afternoon, and the Colors of Courage Ceremony on Nov. 8. A flag-raising ceremony starts at 8 a.m. on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The week ends Nov. 14 with Quilts of Valor presentations, choir performances and a flag retirement ceremony conducted by Scouts at sunset.
