Texas Republicans began a wave of mid-decade redistricting when they backed a plan pushed by President Donald Trump to redraw congressional districts in their favor. California responded with its own redrawn map, Proposition 50, which aimed to flip five Republican-held seats.
Republicans redrew 15 congressional seats over the past two years to try to flip them. As of Wednesday evening, they were projected to lose two-thirds of those seats. Democrats were projected to keep several districts that had been redrawn to favor Republicans.
In Texas, Democrats were projected to hold the 9th, 28th, 34th and 35th districts. Republicans were projected to flip the 32nd District, an open seat after Democratic Rep. Julie Johnson decided to leave Congress. In California, Democrats were projected to flip several Republican-held seats, and in Tennessee's 9th District, Republican Brent Taylor was projected to win after Democrat Justin Pearson conceded.
