Dallas ISD is considering closing six schools to address a $104 million budget shortfall. Trustees are scheduled to begin discussing the proposed closures Thursday, and a final decision is expected later this month. If approved, the closures would take effect in the 2027-28 school year.

District leaders blame inflation, declining enrollment and reduced state funding for the financial challenges. The school board agenda does not say how the six campuses were chosen. The district developed its plan before Texas Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa announced her commitment to providing more money for Texas schools.

Hinojosa has pledged to raise teacher pay, repeal Gov. Greg Abbott's $1 billion school voucher program and prevent additional school closures. She also said she would fire Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath. Zeph Capo, president of the Texas American Federation of Teachers, said concerns about the direction of public education are contributing to families leaving school districts.

Dallas ISD trustees will meet Thursday at 4 p.m. at district offices at 5151 Samuell Blvd. in Dallas. The meeting is open to the public. Hinojosa's news conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. the same day.
