HOME, a nonprofit that houses local musicians, is running a monthlong campaign in November called HOMEcoming. Its executive director, Hanna Cofer, said the campaign is now in its second year and partners with 20 venues across Austin.
Cofer said people can support the effort by going to the participating venues, ordering special cocktails and seeing a show. The idea came from Saxon Pub owner Joe Ables, who last year pledged to donate $1 to HOME for each ticket sold at his club during the month. Cofer said the other venues agreed to donate as well. Each venue runs its own format. Donn's Depot is offering a signature cocktail for the month, and the Moody Center is using a sponsorship model.
HOME began 14 years ago, when a group of musicians helped blues singer Lavelle White, then 84, find stable housing. The organization now also does advocacy work and partners with healthcare organizations. Cofer said HOMEcoming raised around $75,000 last year and that exposure for the nonprofit and the clubs was one of its main benefits.
