Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa has promised to end the state takeover of Fort Worth ISD and Lake Worth ISD, but no one knows when that will happen. The Fort Worth Report said the election does not automatically return power to the elected school boards in either district.
It is unclear when Hinojosa can replace Education Commissioner Mike Morath, and what a new appointee could legally do. Hinojosa said Thursday she is interviewing candidates for education commissioner. Morath said in a written statement that he will work with his successor to ensure a smooth transition for Texas students.
Fort Worth ISD board President Pete Geren, who was appointed by the state, said the appointed board wants to work with elected trustees and do what is right for students. Elected trustee Roxanne Martinez asked appointed board members to serve as caretakers until elected trustees return.
