The Wylie Bulldogs defeated the Cooper Cougars 49-32 on senior night in the Southtown Showdown. The win extended Wylie's streak over its crosstown rival to five games.
The winner was set to take the No. 2 seed in District 2-5A Division II and a home first-round playoff game. Under new UIL rules, the top two seeds in Class 5A and 6A districts host first-round games, while the third- and fourth-place teams travel. A loss would have meant a possible trip to El Paso for Cooper.
Cooper led early on a rushing touchdown by Dot Dunson and a field goal by Felipe Herrera. Wylie quarterback Jaden Karleskint threw touchdown passes to Blake Frailing and Jackston Williams, and the Bulldogs took their first lead of the night. Cooper answered with a 70-yard touchdown pass from Joel Soto to Matthew Balvantin.
