Democrat James Talarico, 37, of Austin, is running close to Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in what the report calls the most expensive U.S. Senate race in the country. Talarico holds a narrow but steady lead in polling, the report said.
Early voting signs showed weak Republican turnout, according to the report. Control of the U.S. Senate could depend on the outcome in Texas, which Republicans have long held and see as a core part of their base.
The report said Democrats see current conditions as favorable, citing a Republican president with low approval ratings, high gas prices and nearly $100 million in spending by groups criticizing Paxton. Talarico has raised more money than any other Senate candidate in the country, the report said.
