Ground was broken Oct. 28 for the Lake Livingston Community Resource Center at the corner of FM 356 and Onalaska Loop in Onalaska. The building will serve as a disaster shelter and a meeting and training facility. It will also provide space for other community services during times of need.

The story says Onalaska is one of the few areas in Polk County without a dedicated disaster shelter. County Judge Sydney Murphy said the need became clear after a 2020 tornado. The project is funded through the Texas General Land Office Community Development Block Grant Program as a Regional Mitigation Infrastructure Project.

Region III, District 3 Game Warden Captain Brandon Mosley said the site's central location will help wardens respond quickly. Murphy said the center will also serve volunteer fire departments, game wardens and rangers. The project is expected to take 12 to 16 months if weather is normal.
