Al Son del Folklore is a local nonprofit dance group in Amarillo that performs in memory of loved ones who have died. Isabel Medina, the group's director and founder, said the Day of the Dead is a festivity in Mexico. She said it is meant to be happy, with the group showing how loved ones were when they were alive.
Performer Natalie Patino said the day is about remembering family traditions and earlier generations. She said her grandmother and great-great uncles were bakers, and some ran their own businesses. Patino said she is still learning more about the holiday. A 9-year-old named Caleb said the celebration helps him remember loved ones who have died.
Performer Yahaira Espinoza said the dances honor both living and lost family members. Medina said the altars, or ofrendas, hold things loved ones enjoyed in life. She said her aunt liked bread, so the group offers bread so the family can still remember her.
