Prosecutors with the United States Attorney's Office will ask that Kevin Alexander Hunt, a teenager, be sentenced to life in federal prison, according to court filings. A final sentencing hearing is set for December 3.
Hunt pleaded guilty earlier this year to an attempt to use a weapon of mass destruction. The charge stems from a failed plan to bomb the annual July 4 parade in Canyon.
In a motion, Hunt's attorney said the prosecutors' plan to seek a life sentence was new to her. She said she had understood that Hunt's guilty plea would bring a sentence well below a life term. She also said she understood federal prosecutors would not seek a harsher punishment because Hunt still faces three felony counts in Randall County.
The attorney asked Judge Matthew J. Kacsmaryk for 90 more days to revise the defense. The judge partially agreed and granted 30 more days. The next Randall County hearing for Hunt is scheduled for April 2027, according to the case report.
