Authorities are conducting a federal investigation after a U.S. Border Patrol agent was attacked before 3 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, on Serenity Lane in north Laredo. A spokesperson for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Laredo said a man attacked the agent in the residential area. The Texas Department of Public Safety described the incident as an officer-involved shooting, but officials have not confirmed which agency is leading the case. DPS and Border Patrol units placed parts of the neighborhood on lockdown after responding.
The Webb County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the death of a person found in the area. Officials have not said whether the death is connected to the attack on the agent. The medical examiner said the person was not undocumented, but has not released a name or age. Authorities have not released the identity or immigration status of the man who attacked the agent. Investigators have not explained the connection between a damaged car near the scene and the case.
Neighbors on Serenity Lane said they were surprised by the overnight incident in their quiet community. One resident said the area is peaceful and that they had never known anything like it. Another said children often play outside in the neighborhood.
