No candidate in the Laredo mayoral race won more than 50% of the vote on Election Day, so the contest will go to a runoff in December. Official election boards show District 8 Councilwoman Alyssa Cigarroa leading with 35.10% of the vote. Incumbent Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino finished second with 32.5%. Three other candidates in the five-person field did not finish in the top two.

Cigarroa campaigned on accountability and tighter budget oversight. She said the city should finish delayed neighborhood street and pipe repairs before starting new capital projects. She also wants to diversify local business development beyond international bridge tolls.

Trevino is seeking reelection based on his record on infrastructure. He pointed to miles of replaced water lines and work to secure a backup water source for the city. After the results, he said his platform will not change for the runoff. "Well, if it comes to a runoff, I'll be putting my same platform forward and just letting the people decide," Trevino said.

The candidates have just over a month to campaign before the runoff. Clean drinking water, neighborhood street repairs and municipal spending were the main issues in the race.
