Democrat Gina Hinojosa won election as Texas governor on Tuesday, defeating Republican incumbent Greg Abbott. The AP reported she is the first Democrat to hold the office since Ann Richards in the 1990s and will be the state's first Latina governor.

Hinojosa, 52, has represented an Austin district in the Texas Legislature since 2017. The report said she entered the race with little money or name recognition and campaigned against artificial intelligence data centers and corruption. Abbott's campaign had spent $180 million since last year, according to the report.

In the U.S. Senate race, James Talarico won over Republican Ken Paxton. Speaking to supporters at her victory party in Austin, Hinojosa said: "Texas, my faith in you never wavered."
