Democrats won governor's races in several states that Republicans had controlled for years, including Texas and Georgia, the Associated Press reported. The wins gave Democrats a majority of governorships for the first time in two decades.
Keisha Lance Bottoms won the Georgia race, making her the first Black woman elected governor in the United States, according to the report. Democrats also won in Iowa, Ohio and Texas.
The report said voter discontent drove the results in Tuesday's midterm elections and described them as a rebuke to President Donald Trump and Republican policymaking. Democrats will now lead the 12 most populous states, except Florida, and all six presidential battleground states that Trump flipped in the 2024 election.
