Grandfalls-Royalty opened district play with a 69-28 win over Balmorhea, handing the Bears their first loss of the year, according to CBS7 Permian Basin. Junior running back Gino Cruz scored four touchdowns in the game. Cruz said his blockers and the rest of the team made it possible.
The win put the Cowboys at the top of the Class 1A Division II District 6 standings. Cruz said he believes the team can keep that spot through its final two district games. The Cowboys have 13 players. Cruz said the team is aiming for state.
Grandfalls-Royalty is in its second season under head coach Jourmain Matta, whom Cruz praised for keeping the team ready to play. The team plays Sanderson on Friday.
