The San Antonio Zoo is welcoming Tatu, a 7-year-old African lion moving from the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center in Kansas. Tatu was born at the Denver Zoo on July 25, 2019, and spent the past three years in Topeka. He is described as playful, intelligent and a little cautious. His favorite treats are rabbits and bones.

Tim Morrow, president and CEO of the San Antonio Zoo, said Tatu's arrival reflects the role zoos play in protecting wildlife and sustaining species like African lions. Tatu will join Sarabi, an 18-year-old lion who has lived at the zoo for a long time. Zoo officials said the two will be kept in separate spaces for safety. Staff will let them see, smell and interact through protective barriers.

Lauren Inderbitzen, the zoo's director of animal wellbeing, said the care plan for each lion is tailored to its needs. Tatu's move is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan. The zoo has not set a date for public viewing. Officials said Tatu will have time to adjust before he is shown to visitors.
