The Texas Health and Human Services Commission announced Oct. 23 its intent to award state grants to three Colorado County healthcare providers. The grants are part of the Rural Texas Strong Program, which totals $87 million for 129 rural Texas providers.
Columbus Community Hospital was offered $1,115,000 under the Infrastructure and Capital Investments initiative, which funds the addition or replacement of medical equipment. Rice Medical Center in Eagle Lake was offered $7,494,340 under the Make Rural Texans Healthy Again initiative, which supports community-based prevention, wellness and nutrition programs aimed at diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and obesity.
General Surgery of Texas, operated by Dr. Heather Vasser, was offered $112,000.08 under the Next Generation of the Small Town Doctor and Team initiative.
The commission said a grant is not considered awarded until a contract has been fully executed between HHSC and the applicant.
