Democrat James Talarico is projected to win the U.S. Senate race in Texas, defeating Republican Ken Paxton. Talarico, 37, is a state legislator and former middle school teacher. The report said he would be Texas' first Democratic senator since 1993 and the Senate's youngest member.
He would replace Sen. John Cornyn, 74, who lost a Republican primary to Paxton. The report said Paxton faced a federal corruption investigation that did not result in charges, and he was impeached by the Texas House and later acquitted in the state Senate. The race was one of the most expensive midterm contests, according to the report.
The report said Democrats needed to gain four seats to take control of the Senate. Talarico told crowds the biggest divide in the U.S. "is not left versus right, it's top versus bottom."
