Construction on the Sunset Amphitheater in McKinney is between 70% and 75% complete, according to Chloe Polhamus, vice president of Strategic Initiatives and Philanthropy at Venu, the facility's developer. Crews are finishing the foundational steelwork and installing the final pieces of the canopy roof, she said. Crews will soon begin work on the lower seating bowl and the stage.
Venu is targeting completion in the first quarter of 2027, Polhamus said, but no opening date has been announced. The venue is near the northeast corner of US 75 and SH 121 and could host up to 100 music shows a year. It is designed for seat configurations that can accommodate up to 20,000 attendees.
Venu closed a $60 million sale-leaseback transaction on the property earlier this month, according to a news release. Bob Mudd, vice president of construction and market expansion at Venu, said the company's cost is about $334 million, up from an original expected investment of $220 million. Mudd said the amphitheater will have a full climate control system so it can operate from October to April.
