Bob Yancy was elected mayor of College Station on Tuesday night after his opponent, Elizabeth Cunha, conceded the race. Yancy, a two-term former city councilman, received 18,365 votes to Cunha's 12,691.
On election night, Yancy told KBTX he was excited by the result and said he wants to help keep the community's quality of life in place for future generations, retirees and all residents. In an earlier interview, he said rising housing costs and ongoing growth make it harder for younger residents to get established. He described growth as a "two-sided coin" that brings traffic and housing challenges as well as jobs and economic benefits.
Cunha told KBTX she admired and respected Yancy. Yancy returned the praise, calling Cunha a "class act" and recognizing her dedication to the community.
Yancy will be sworn in as mayor on Nov. 16. He succeeds John Nichols, who served four years and did not seek re-election.
