The race for Texas House District 14, which covers Bryan and College Station, was too close to call Tuesday night after Brazos County completed its Election Day ballot counts. Democrat Janet Dudding led Republican Paul Dyson 30,780 to 30,465, a gap of 315 votes. Libertarian Jeff Miller had 1,568 votes, or 2.5% of the total through late Tuesday.
Brazos County Elections Administrator Trudy Hancock told KBTX that provisional and potential absentee ballots would be counted Wednesday, and the votes would be finalized Tuesday, Nov. 10. Texas law requires only a plurality to win a seat in a November general election, so Dudding would win outright if her lead holds.
Dudding left a Brazos County Democratic Party election event Tuesday night before the county released its final count. Dyson did not publicly concede Tuesday evening and declined an interview with KBTX at a campaign event in Bryan. Dudding, a certified public accountant, lost the 2022 Democratic race for Texas comptroller to Glenn Hegar and lost the 2020 House District 14 race to Republican John Raney. Dyson, a freshman, was elected in 2024 with more than 60% of the vote.
