Bryan ISD voters rejected a tax rate increase for the district's maintenance and operations in a Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE). The measure, Proposition A, received 19,591 votes against (58.9%) and 13,652 votes for (41.1%), failing by 5,939 votes.
Voters were asked to approve a 2-cent increase to the district's maintenance and operations tax rate, from $0.6769 to $0.6968, according to the district. Bryan ISD had estimated the increase would generate $5.5 million a year in recurring revenue that is not subject to state recapture, meaning all of the money would stay within the district.
When the board called the election, Bryan ISD Board of Trustees President Joel Bryan said the board was committed to providing clear and transparent information about the VATRE and its financial impact if voters approved it.
