Dallas police responded at 1:28 a.m. on October 31 to a two-vehicle crash at Elam Road and South Buckner Boulevard. Investigators said a Ford SUV traveling westbound on Elam Road at a high rate of speed ran a red light and struck a Chevrolet Camaro heading southbound on South Buckner Boulevard. The Camaro was pushed off the road and hit a fence around a construction site.
The Camaro's only occupant, an adult man, was taken to a local hospital by Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedics with critical injuries and died shortly after arriving. The SUV driver left the scene on foot before officers arrived. The Dallas County Medical Examiner identified the man as 22-year-old Jacob Gonzalez. Police have not identified the SUV driver. The Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating and reviewing surveillance footage.
Gonzalez's family said his brother called him to find out where he was, and someone else answered and told the brother that Gonzalez had been killed in a hit-and-run. His sister, Jacqueline Gonzalez, said a bystander found his insurance card near the crash and went to his home to tell the family. His aunt, Marggie Cabello, said the family spent hours trying to locate him.
