A McKinney High School student was detained by the McKinney Police Department after a firearm was found in his possession on campus on Wednesday, according to McKinney ISD.
The district said the student arrived late and entered through the school's designated entrance, where the Evolv weapons detection system alerted campus officials to a potential security concern. Personnel found the student had a firearm, and the weapon was recovered. The 17-year-old has been charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon in prohibited places, a third-degree felony, the district said. He had recently enrolled in McKinney ISD, and the district says he will not return.
The McKinney Police Department is still investigating. District officials said weapons are strictly prohibited on McKinney ISD campuses and that the incident shows the importance of its safety measures, including the weapons detection systems. They thanked campus staff and law enforcement for their response.
