November is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Awareness Month. COPD is a term for several chronic lung diseases. Renato Galindo, director of cardiopulmonary services at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, described two common forms: emphysema, which makes it hard to exhale, and bronchitis, which causes a chronic cough with mucus. Galindo said COPD often develops through smoking or exposure to harmful particles.

Galindo said many people with the disease are not diagnosed. He said a pulmonary function test is needed for a proper diagnosis. He cited more than 1 million Texans diagnosed with COPD, and said others may not be getting proper treatment. The story says early diagnosis is important because treatment depends on the stage of the illness, and that untreated COPD can worsen and become fatal.

Galindo said COPD deaths are rising and that more people are dying each year from the disease. He said vaccinations can help prevent flare-ups and pneumonia, especially heading into winter and flu season. He also said the disease cannot be reversed, but quality of life can improve. Anyone who suspects they or a loved one may have COPD should see a doctor for evaluation and testing.
