Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Greg Abbott in the Texas governor's race on Tuesday night, according to the report. Hinojosa would be the state's first Latina governor and the first Democrat to hold the office in over three decades. The last Democrat elected governor of Texas was Ann Richards, who took office in 1991.
Hinojosa received 52.8% of the vote, according to the Associated Press, and led in Collin and Denton counties. Both counties favored Donald Trump in the last three presidential elections, the AP said. The report also said other Democrats, including James Talarico and Vikki Goodwin, won key statewide races.
Hinojosa focused her campaign on affordability, public education and concerns about AI data centers, which have spread quickly across Texas, the report said. She also distanced herself from what she called "culture war" issues. In her victory speech, she said the campaign was about whether Texans have a government that belongs to them, not to the highest bidder, the biggest donor or the most powerful lobbyist.
