A majority of League City voters voted "no" on Proposition A, which asked whether the League City Police Department should keep using automated license plate readers at fixed locations on public roads, according to city election results.
The city said it will follow a resolution the City Council passed on Oct. 27. That resolution calls for the cameras to be removed within 72 hours of the official canvass of the election results, which is set for the council's Nov. 17 meeting. Mayor Nick Long has asked city staff to cover or bag the cameras now, without waiting for the canvass.
Once the cameras are bagged, the police department can no longer collect data or share information with outside agencies, the city said. Data already collected will be purged from the department's system after 30 days unless it is kept as evidence in an active case. The city manager has been directed to review the city's agreements with Flock Safety and pursue changes or termination as appropriate.
