Around 2:20 a.m., Houston police and firefighters responded to an apartment complex on Bering Drive in the Greater Uptown area. A police lieutenant said a man had tried to enter a unit that was not his. The resident of that apartment said he woke to someone shaking the door handle and kicking the door. He took his AR-15 rifle, looked through the peephole, and opened the door only after checking for weapons.
Police said the man tried to force his way inside and repeatedly said, "This is my apartment." The resident pushed back and fired one shot, hitting the man in the upper body. Houston Fire Department paramedics took the man to a hospital in critical condition. The man was last reported to be in critical condition.
Investigators confirmed the man lives in the same complex. Officers believe he was likely intoxicated and returning from a party when he tried to enter the wrong second-floor unit. The resident and his girlfriend are cooperating with investigators. Police said no other injuries were reported and have not released the names of either man.
