The Timber Creek High School girls basketball team is honoring former player Ava Moore, who was killed in a jet ski collision on Lake Grapevine in May 2025. For the second year, the team will dedicate its first game of the season, on Friday, to Moore and retire her No. 21 jersey. Police said a jet ski operator who fled the scene caused the collision. The operator was later caught.
The team will sell T-shirts at the game to benefit the "Moore Than" Foundation. The foundation will provide a $5,000 scholarship to a Timber Creek senior this year. Moore was 18 years old when she died.
Head coach LaToya Wyatt said Moore was "a beautiful soul." Teammate Kylie Topping, an 11th grader, said Moore was someone she wanted to be like when she got older. Former head coach Tina DeMichele said Moore liked golf, the guitar and animals. Moore had planned to join the U.S. Air Force, and she returned to visit the team after graduating to talk about its core values.
