The Elgin Independent School District board will meet Thursday, Nov. 5, to consider next steps after Superintendent Christopher Bailey was arrested on a driving-under-the-influence charge. The district said Bailey was detained earlier this week while traveling home from Austin.
Bailey, 47, was named superintendent on Sept. 1. The district said he told staff and families about the arrest himself and has taken full responsibility. According to media reports, he was booked into the Travis County Jail at 3:43 a.m. Oct. 29 on a DUI/alcohol charge and released after posting a $4,000 bond.
The district said reports that Bailey had previously been arrested for driving while intoxicated stemmed from a clerical error in Travis County records. Board President Byron Mitchell said trustees take the matter seriously and that Bailey has been open with school officials about the situation.
According to an arrest affidavit cited by KVUE, a Manor police officer saw a 2014 Toyota Tacoma in the left lane of U.S. 290 about 1:45 a.m. Oct. 29. The officer said the truck did not leave the left lane, which was marked for passing only.
