The Texas Supreme Court has paused proceedings in a case over mailers about transgender resources that were addressed to "students" at households across Texas. The stay came Friday, while justices review a petition for a writ of mandamus and a separate request for temporary relief.
A Travis County judge had ruled that attorneys for the Transgender Education Network of Texas, known as TENT, can question the people behind the mailers. The mailers were sent to thousands of Texas households, and they repeatedly reference TENT. TENT denied sending them and said it has no affiliation with the sender.
The mailers list a return name of Texas Transgender Student Union, which the source says was formed in September in Wyoming. Austin attorney Chris Hilton, who represents the Wyoming LLC, filed an appeal against TENT's petition. He argued in court documents that his client wants to keep its identity hidden and has a First Amendment right to remain anonymous.
