Garland police arrested two students after a photo of a student holding a firearm on the Garland High School campus circulated on social media. The school was placed on a safety hold during the police investigation.

On October 29 at about 9:45 a.m., school resource officers learned of the photo and located the student, police said. He was taken into custody and faces charges of exhibition, use, or threat of exhibition or use of a firearm. Police also charged him with possession of less than one gram of THC after finding a marijuana vape pen. Police said a second student was involved in the photo. That student was detained and charged with the same firearm offense.

Normal classroom activities continued during the hold, but hallway movement was restricted for a period of time. Police did not say whether they recovered the firearm seen in the photo. The names of the arrested students have not been released.

In a statement, the Garland Police Department and Garland ISD said they take incidents involving firearms seriously and that the safety of students and staff is their top priority. "This type of behavior will not be tolerated," the statement said.
