In her victory speech on Tuesday night, Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa said she will fire Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath on her first day in office.

Chris Tritico of the Houston Federation of Teachers said that move would not end the state's takeover of the Houston Independent School District right away. Tritico said the elected board would have to change through votes, and that Texas education code phases in new board members only a few at a time. He said it would be some time before a majority of the elected board could fire Mike Miles.

Asked whether the takeover would change education, Tritico said, "Not today, but it will over the next few years." Hinojosa, a former school board member, is set to take office January 1.
